⛵ Ionian Islands (Corfu to Kefalonia)

The Ionian Islands are very different from their Aegan counterparts, greener, culturally influenced by Venice and featuring some maritime engineering dating back as far as 600 BC. This week will be an easy 110 miles one-way sail, leaving from Corfu and visiting Paxos, Lefkas and many more smaller islands on our way to Kefalonia, with plenty of swimming and snorkeling in the crystal clear and warm waters.

On this trip, we'll be able to join several other crews from both London and further afield for daytime swim stops or evening activities whenever we feel like. There will be opportunities to skipper passages (for those qualified),  for practice drills and to swap boats for a day if you would like to do so.

ITINERARY

Our first stop is Kerkyra (or Corfu town), probably the most fortified city in the world. It was the outpost of the Venetians against the Ottoman empire since the middle ages and most of the castles can still be seen today. We then head further South through the Strait of Corfu, passing the little islet of Pontikonisi with it's 11th century Byzantine chapel (see picture below), before crossing the strait and stopping at Platarias marina (on the mainland) or anchoring in one of the bays in the Mourtos and Sivota group of islands.

Leaving the strait towards the island of Antipaxos, we will explore some of the finest beaches (VrikaVoutoumi) in the Ionian see before spending the night in the natural harbour of Gaios, with it's Venetian-style architecture and pastel colored buildings. From Gaios, we'll depart for the longest sail in this week, a 33 miles trip to to Preveza on the Greek mainland (picture below).

We continue our journey south to Lefkas. It was once connected to the Greek mainland by a small isthmus until the Corinthians dug a canal around 600 BC, opening up the strait of Lefkada for shipping.

Our next stops will be on the island of Meganissi or the village of Sivota on Lefkas. From there, we cross over to another Ionian jewel, Fiskardo in the North of Kefalonia. (Alternative route: via Myrtos Beach and Asos, depending on weather and crew).

We'll be finishing the week exploring some of the numerous coves in the Strait of Ithaca (home of Odysseus) before mooring up in either Effimia or Sami, where we will be welcomed by the week 2 crew and say goodbye to everyone returning to London.

Those who stay on board for the second week can expect a more challenging sail to Athens, via the stunning Corinth Canal. 220 miles, taking in places like Mesalongion, Trizonia, Galaxhidi, Kiato, Corinth, Korfos, Aegina en route.
