Bank Holiday Cross Channel Sail Boat 1

Boat 1

The plan is to have two (or possibly more) boats for this trip - with me being responsible for just one of them and Tom for the second one.  Please remember that you must have a valid passport to be able to sail to France!

Depending on crew and weather a three day weekend is ideal for a cross-channel adventure to France or the Channel Islands with a full day to recover (and take advantage of the cheaper Euro by stocking up on bottles of wine) before heading back.  A great way to build up some miles as well (expect at least 150NM for your log book).

No previous experience required, although lots of enthusiasm needed.

 - details as follows:

The boat (2010 Baviaria 38) based in Gosport

MCA Cat2 coded with full safety equipment including life jackets, life raft, DSC radio, as required for coding. The boat also benefits from central heating. [see ] ]

An ideal itinerary would be

Friday 1st May at 20:30 meet at the boat collect the shopping and have dinner

Friday night: overnight sail to France

Saturday 2nd May midday - lunch in Cherbourg dinner in some nice French bistro

Sunday 3rd May set off early for Lymington

Bank holiday Monday - Lymington to Gosport to be back by lunch time.

Crossing the channel is always a bit hit and miss and it's not really much fun unless the weather is more or less on form (not rough sea and not head-to-wind for the whole journey).  Ideally a nice warm day with a force 5 westerly breeze.  Equally the crew needs to be up for it - it typically takes 11-12 hours which is quite a long stint on the water for many people but it's a great way to get some sea-miles under your belt and also a great sense of achievement.

Costs - £150 for the weekend (less 10% if you've sailed with me before) plus share of food, fuel and marina costs (shouldn't come to more than £25 max).

Checklist of things to bring:
• Suitcase: Space is limited on the boat so bring soft bags only
• Clothing: warm and waterproof, hat sailing gloves and sunglasses, sun cream
• Bedding: You will need a pillow case and sleeping bag (or duvet and sheets if you prefer); there are pillows on board (you can of course bring your own as well)
• Towel
• Shoes: soft non-marking shoes only please (or sailing boots).
• Food and drink: I will do a big shop before the trip including cereals, eggs and bacon, pasta, chocolate, bread, butter, tea, coffee, wate etc. Let me know if there is you can’t eat/live without
• Health: let me know if you have any health issues! Think of bringing sea-sickness pills if you are affected.

• EU passport or Schengen visa

For events arranged via "Meetup" the information below must be read, understood and accepted for all participants: Key details The boat, which is berthed at Haslar Marina in Gosport, is a Bavaria 38 (38ft) sailing boat built in 2010. It has three double cabins with two additional single berths in the main cabin. You should bring a good sleeping bag and pillow case and make sure that you have soft luggage which can be easily stowed on board. The boat is coded for charter each year by the MCA to ensure safety. You must make the skipper aware of any health or other issues which he may need to know in order to ensure the safety of all on board. The boat has much safety equipment on board including 10 automatic life-jackets, radio equipment (with GPS positioning), a GPS on-deck chart-plotter and a self-inflating life-raft etc.
