Multi-Yacht Match Race Training

We're putting together a Round The Isle of Wight match race training weekend for advanced sailors. 

The idea is to have several (minimum 2) identical Oceanis 37 yachts sailing in close distance trying to get an advantage from better trim, helming and manoeuvers. We will frequently allow all boats to catch-up to sustain an element of competitive spirit throughout the day. This is NOT a race, but a training experience to put sailing theory into practice.

This trip is planned for the weekend February 27 - March 1 (Friday evening – Sunday evening), with a possible alternative or additional date March 27 - March 29.


Friday: We'll meet up in the evening for a group meal before we settle into our heated yachts where the nominated Skippers will give you a crew and safety briefing.

Saturday: Early start because, due to tides, we need to slip lines before 7am for a counter-clockwise sail around the Isle of Wight. We aim to get back into Cowes around 6pm for hot showers, food, drinks and celebration.

Sunday: More time on the water until the mid-afternoon, and then we have to return the boats to Port Hamble Marina, followed by a farewell drink in the nearby bar before heading home.


The event is organized on fair, non-profit, shared cost and shared liability terms by the Event Hosts. The cost of this weekend is £130 per person. 

Payment schedule: £30 with your RSVP and £100 before 31/01/2015. This price includes on-board accommodation in shared double cabins, all costs relating to the yacht and marinas, together with breakfasts, lunches, snacks and some drinks on board. You will need to pay for your own evening meals and drinks and supply a £250 Damage Deposit Cheque prior to departure.

The event will go ahead provided that we reach a minimum number of 12 participants (incl. Skippers). We aim to open up additional spaces in blocks of 6 if we have sufficient interest. If this event appears to be full, please register on the waiting list.


This trip is for advanced sailors with basic knowledge (or better: experience) in sail trimming, helming, manoeuvers, collision prevention rules and navigation. The Skippers will arrange crews to ensure that appropriate skills are available on each yacht. We will leave the relatively sheltered waters of the Western Solent for most of the Saturday, so if you know you may be affected by the rougher conditions you should take appropriate seasickness medication (Stugeron, Kwells, etc) and inform your Skipper in advance that you may be susceptible.

As we'll be sailing in most weather conditions, you will need several layers of warm clothes (e.g. woolly underwear, 1-2 mid-layers of fleece or similar non-cotton materials and a good waterproof outer layer), head wear, gloves, thick socks and rubber boots. Waterproofs and rubber boots hire can be arranged in advance from the Charter Company for an additional fee. Safety vest, harness and tether will be supplied. You will also need to bring a towel, warm sleeping bag and, if you want one, a pillow. A red light (head) torch and sailing knife is recommended.

We will need 2 to 4 first mates, with minimum Day Skipper qualification, so please contact me if you are interested in these roles.

This event is also advertised on the City Sailing Club Meetup group, so a number of crew may have signed up from that group.


Sailing can be a dangerous activity with substantial risks including but not limited to, serious head, neck or spinal injuries, heart attacks, injury to bones, joints or muscles, cold shock, drowning and death. By voluntarily participating in this event, you agree to accept any and all inherent risks of personal injury or death. You will be required to sign a Waiver And Liability Release Form prior to departure. You also agree to follow all safety instructions given to you and accept that the Skipper has final decision on activities and the itinerary, with safety of the crew, the yachts, other boats and the terms of the Charter Agreement in mind.

All yachts are fully insured by the Charter Company with a Security Deposit of £1,500 per yacht to cover the excess payment. By participating, you agree to accept joint liability for damages and to supply a £250 Damage Deposit Cheque towards the yacht(s) aggregated Security Deposit. This works the same way as the deposit when hiring a car, as the cheque will not be cashed except in the rare event that the Charter Company requires some payment taken from the aggregated Security Deposit. You will be refunded for any difference between the cheque amount and your share of the amount actually paid to the Charter Company. As an example, assume that there is a total of 18 participants on 3 yachts and the Charter Company requires a £360 payment for damage to one of the yachts. In this case, your share would be £20, no matter what yacht you were crewing on.

The Event Host(s) is an occasional event-host and neither the Event Host(s) or The London Sailing Club Meetup group is a professional organiser (as such term is defined under The Package Travel, Package Holidays and Package Tours Regulations 1992); accordingly this event shall not be construed as a “package tour” or "package holiday".

This event description (including any notes) in conjunction with a written or emailed acceptance of payment from the Event Host(s) shall constitute a written agreement between you and the Event Host(s).

If the trip is cancelled by the Event Host for any reason, you will be refunded in full for all monies paid. In the event of cancellation by the Charter Company (e.g. due to severe weather forecasts), the event will be rescheduled. If you’re unable to participate in the rescheduled event, we aim to fully refund you, provided that you give us immediate notice and that we are able to sell your place to another Meetup member. All refunds will be net of any bank charges, foreign exchange costs or paypal deductions. No refund will be given in the event of cancellation by you (incl. reasons outside of your control). However, you are allowed to sell-on your place to another suitable Meetup group member, pending confirmation by the Event Host(s), which should not be unreasonably withheld.
